Review of The Spirit (1987) by Stephen S — 18 Jun 2011
Not as bad as I thought it would be, but still pretty stupid. The worst part about The Spirit is that it had so much potential...the trailer I saw for it a couple of years ago looked really awesome. That's also probably part of the reason why everyone hated it.
True, it wasn't that good to begin with, but it's not the worst movie ever made either. With the huge amount of promotion and hype surrounding this film, it probably couldn't have lived up to it all even if it had been a really good film.
The other main problem with The Spirit is that it's just too weird to be enjoyable...thanks in part to Samuel L. Jackson, who is way below his usual standards here. I can't stand the main guy, Gabriel Macht, either, though Mendes and Johansson aren't bad.
Not worth seeing, even if you liked Sin City, which is in the same vein as The Spirit (both Frank Miller creations).
