Review of The Spirit (1987) by Jonny B — 04 Aug 2012
Fabulous visuals and imagery; you can transparently see how the creator of this had previously worked on 300 and Sin City. But Frank Miller's Spirit is a tired, lacklustre mash up of stylish fighting and raunchy scenes which in turn leads to a woefully lousy product.
First of all, when your so called hero and villain are about as interesting as Meet the Spartans (not very) you have a huge problem.
Samuel L. Jackson is appallingly poor as The Spirit's nemesis Octopus; the popular actor - to be fair to him - had a dire script full of cheesy lines and cannot be wholly blamed for the mess. However, at times he is so eccentric when confronting The Spirit it's embarrassing.
Equally as cringe-worthy Gabriel Macht's portrayal of The Spirit; he is full of himself, full of sadly more cheesy lines and a terrible casting choice by Miller who appears to have focused on visuals much more than story and character.
Basically, the whole plot in The Spirit sees Macht prowl around Central City having been brought back from the dead, to stop crime. Crime in particular coming from Jackson's laughable Octopus villain.
See this at your own peril...you've been warned!
