While there's a place for middling fantasy adventures for children, especially in the lulls between Harry Potter releases, you have to commend films like Coroline, Where the Wild Things Are, and Ponyo that manage to push the visual envelope while still providing substantive food for thought.
Spiderwick Chronicles is average at doing both.
