Review of The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008) by Veronica N — 10 Oct 2013
The story is about the Grace family including Jared and Simon both played by Freddie Highmore, Mallory played by Sarah Bolger and Helen played by Mary-Louise Parker who move into a house with newly magical surroundings.
Jared finds a book which a note says that he shouldn't read so he reads it and therefore everything breaks loose. He meets Thimbletack voiced by Martin Short who tells him about the magical creatures.
However, a shape-shifting ogre named Mulgarath voiced by Nick Nolte wants the book so he kidnaps Simon, mistaking him for Jared. Jared then meets Hogsqueal, a bird-eating hobgoblin voiced by Seth Rogen who is seeking revenge on Mulgarath for killing his family.
The goblins attack the house and steal some of the pages from the book. Hoping that one of the pages will destroy the protective circle around the house, during moon rise. However, the Grace family protect themselves and destroy all the goblins and Mulgarath is eaten by Hogsqueal.
and they all live happily ever after. I remember reading the books as a kid so when I heard there was an adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles, I was hoping it to be good and compared to other kids' movies, it's not that bad.
It was an impressive adaptation that kept the heart of the stories. The Spiderwick Chronicles gets a 7.5/10.
