Review of The Spectacular Now (2013) by Ali B — 24 Dec 2013
Just fresh enough to escape the trappings of so many coming of age stories yet still familiar enough to feel stale after watching its expected outcome. Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley are really great in it, while the supporting players give able turns.
The direction is not overtly visual, but does feature some flourishes, sadly all to few. Where it does work is getting nuanced and deep performances from its characters, which once again drive this on again off again narrative.
It has tremendous heart, but ultimately it falters when it needs to leave the first layer so the film plays it safe when it could have went deeper.
