Review of The Spectacular Now (2013) by Daniel V — 20 Jan 2014
The Spectacular Now is, pun very intended and sentiment intended equally, SPECTACULAR! I'm glad I waited to do my Top Ten of 2013, but I'm not glad I took so long to watch this. This is why coming of age and teen dramas need to be PG13 or R, so kids can be real.
I don't mean Spring Breakers extreme reality, but like real kids. No matter how old you are, everyone faced very similar problems as a teen. Some more hardcore than others but similar problems like alienation, heartbreak, bullying, loneliness, thinking no one alive can understand you.
And being young, these things are all new. The newness as well as sometimes being hit with all at the same time, cause us to act in irrational ways because we are still learning how to deal with them.
As adults hopefully we learn to control them better and act rationally, though that is not always the case. That's why movies like NOW resonate with people of all ages. And when they are made as well as NOW, it's stays with you long after you've left the theater or taken the disc out.
Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller are going to be around a long time. The rest of the talented cast compliments them well, but this is very much their story. See it, please. Do yourself a favor, see this wonderful flick and you will thank me later.
I absolutely loved this movie.
