Review of The Spectacular Now (2013) by Beth M — 23 Jan 2014

A lovely film about two high school seniors that look, feel and seem like real 18 year olds. Do u know how rare that is? They aren't crippled by irony. Their not rushed up into cartoons. Their sex lives aren't insulted by cheaply treated scenes. The story requires them to make love, but doesn't mean we have to be insisted to see her boobs. Sutter and Aimee are smart, but they make some dumb mistakes. Their very serious about life, but Sutter, makes a concealed effort. Sutter (Miles Teller) lives with his mother. His dad isn't with them. Sutter always gets buzzed, carrying a monogrammed flask pours it in his fast-food drinks. He drinks while driving. He passed out on a lawn of a house he's never seen. He wakes up and meets Aimee (Shailene Woodley), they go to the same school but never has seen her. They start talking, and stroll through wooded area nearby. Sutter also, asks Aimee's help with his geometry homework, Geometry a very advanced part of math.
Sutter isn't looking for a girlfriend. Aimee has never had a boyfriend. After his breakup with Cassidy (Brie Larson) he got really drunk. She's not a bitch queen you would often see in teenagers movies. She can tell there is no future for him if he keeps on drinking. His teacher (Andre Royo) has the same thoughts. Sutter takes Aimee to prom, they love each other and hangout.
This adaptation of Tim Tharp's novel, directed by James Ponsoldt and written by the writers of (500) Days Of Summer, makes you laugh and breaks your heart. Sutter and Aimee feel like a true couple, their the main reason "The Spectacular Now" is engaging coming-of- age tale. I'll talk about John Hugdes for a second, he was for the best and worst about the teen movies. If he were still alive. "The Spectacular Now" would be a movie he make. This is up in his league .
