Review of The Spectacular Now (2013) by Nick D — 30 Jan 2014
Indie buzz, post-Sundance, is what brought me to this well-made but fairly conventional coming-of-age tale focusing on a trio of high school seniors. Sutter is a charming drunk, basically, who screws up his life, predictably because his dad left the family at an early age.
His involvement with two girls, one pretty and popular but with ambition, the other plain, smart and broken form the spine of the story. Well-made, great naturalistic dialog, but ultimately nothing mind-blowingly great here.
