Review of The Spectacular Now (2013) by James R — 19 Jul 2014
Sutter (Miles Teller) is the life of the party. The guy who makes everyone laugh and have a good time. Past this image Sutter has some issues himself. He drinks way too much (and he's only 18) his girlfriend has let him for another guy and he has family issues too.
Sutter passes out one night and wakes up to meet Aimee (Shailene Woodley) literally one of the nicest people that Sutter has ignored at school. Shailene and Sutter soon hit it off and realize they have a lot in common.
They soon start a romance, but Sutter realizes maybe he's a bad influence and that he isn't destined to be happy. There's of course more to it than this, but I don't wanna spoil the ending which I found was quite well done.
The film also stars Brie Larson, as Sutter's ex-girlfriend Cassidy, Jennifer Jason Leigh as Sutter's mom, and Kyle Chandler as Sutter's estranged father Tommy. I found the film was less a romance (although it does play a big part), but more about Sutter and what he's going through and how through all of these events happening they change him and realize that you get plenty of "nows" and that you have to make an effort to make sure they're all important or significant.
Overall, I recommend giving this one a look its a movie that will have you thinking and that a lot of people will be able to relate to.
