Review of The Spectacular Now (2013) by Brad S — 27 Jul 2014
Basic: 18- year old Sutter Keely (Miles Teller), who's about to get graduated from high school, and has no plans for his future. The activities that he does most of his life is drinking and going into some big parties. Then, he meets Aimee Finecky (Shailene Woodley), who's different than him because she has so many plans for her future.
What's the deal: The spectacular now has almost everything of a really great coming-of-age story. To start off, both the set-up and the character development in the film are the two biggest reasons of what make this film great. I really like the fact on how this film focuses on the main character because I can get to see the insight of his personality, and his activities. Miles Teller, who's been in a few films like 21 & Over, the remake of Footloose, Rabbit Hole, and Project X, but in The Spectacular Now, he deliver a really solid performance, and makes me want to see him more movies. Shailene Woodley, on the other hand, delivers a performance not only great, but most likely charming. The relationship between Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley is of course felt very sensitive to me.
Other greatness about this movie: The direction is really good. The script is pretty good, and I also like the score of this movie as well. The ending is well-executed. At least, it does have a great message at the end.
My full opinion: The Spectacular Now is a warm and a sweet motion picture. I find it more realistic and charming than The Perks of Being a Wallflower on my opinion. 9.5/10.
