This movie broke my heart in a thousand places, but I'm really glad I watched it. Miles Teller (who I had only seen before in a brief TV cameo) and Shailene Woodley (who blew me away with The Descendants) handle their scenes beautifully: professional yet natural.
Weber deserves recognition for assembling a script that makes characters feel like flesh and blood teenagers, not just caricatures of what a typical High School student would be. Pair the stupendous chemistry and remarkable script with a great premise and great direction, and you've got one of the hidden gems of 2013.
Unlike so many others before it, it is a High School romantic drama that feels...well, like a High School romantic drama - and for that, The Spectacular Now is one of my favorite movies of 2013.
