Review of The Specials (2000) by Rob A — 01 Jun 2010
This film makes no apologies for lack of special effects. It doesn't bemoan it's own lack of a Villain (with the capital "V"). The real-life personalities of these characters aren't super-heroic.
They're people, each with a little more than their share of baggage. They have to deal, on a daily basis, with their own mediocrity, and the pressure to continue to give the world The Amazing is a weight that you can see in their interactions throughout the film.
They are the castoffs of superheroic society which, while they are still more amazing that your Average Joe, is a stigma that informs all of their perspectives. This film is courageous in it's willingness to give us mediocrity and make it Special.
