Review of The Specialist (1994) by Mark T — 22 Sep 2012
"The Specialist" is a good film that is bogged by down an over sexualized under tone and an obscure focus on the villain. The film follows Ray as he is now doing hitman-for-hire type jobs, after a misshap in the military, when he gets locked into a job that has a woman wanting to kill the man who killed her parents when she was a little girl.
This is where it gets confusing. The film plays the woman out to be an innocent woman, until it is revealed that she sold out Ray to the man who Ray quit the military over. However, another kink is thrown into the mix when it is revealed that the man who was Ray's military partner is actually working with the CIA and a Miami drug lord.
On top of that, we have the man who killed her father. Confused? Thats okay, so am I. This poor outlining of the villain is what makes this movie a tough one to follow. The acting is good all across the board, and the action is top notch, but the hazy focus on the villain keeps this film from being good.
