Review of The Special Relationship (2010) by Matthew G — 06 Aug 2010
This is the third in the Blair trilogy which started with the Deal in 2003, then the Queen in 2006. All 3 screenplays are written by Peter Morgan who has become something of a expert in all things Tony Blair.
Micheal Sheen plays Blair in a way that is totally believable. He becomes Blair. But what is a little suprising is Dennis Quaid as Bill Clinton. Quaid has all the mannerisms, the voice so down pat. It's a great performance.
Hope Davis is also good as Hillary Clinton. It's not a very flashy film to look at but that's not what the director is going for at all. He wants to get all the different incidents that occured between blair and clinton such as Lewinsky scandal, Kosovo, Northern Ireland.
What I only realised after watching was how Blair went from a left - center politican to a right wing once clinton went and bush came in. He stood up to clinton but cowered to bush ?? Why ??? Because bush told him who was really in charge.
I think in the beginning of their relationship blair and clinton had something good going and they both lost their way.
