Review of The Spanish Prisoner (1997) by Conor M — 19 Aug 2009
Writer/director David Mamet has turned out a pretty diverse catalogue over the years, and with the engrossing, twisty con game film The Spanish Prisoner, he continues to prove he's one of the best out there. Joe Ross.
(played by Campbell Scott) has invented a very valuable "process" that could make his company millions. While on a business retreat, he meets wealthy businessman Jimmy Dell (Steve Martin). What follows is a classic "people aren't who they say they are" con game thriller where everyone is suspect. Scott is good as an ordinary guy caught up in a complicated web, and Martin gives a great dramatic turn as the mysterious rich man. The twist-filled plot, coupled with Mamet's excellent dialogue, makes for a very entertaining film.
