Review of The Space Between Us (2017) by Hilary C — 13 Jan 2019
I have been having an Asa Butterfield obsession and has been trying to watch everything he's in. Upon reading the reviews, I was very conflicted, because they seemed to suggest it's a really bad film. The fact that it tanked in the box office didn't help matters. But I decided to watch it anyway, though unfortunately, I have to say it's underwhelming to say the least.
Many people have pointed out the issues with it, so I'll just focus on the logical issues in the clichï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2 (C)-filled plot:
Isn't Gary a little too old to be his father? Remember he looked just as old in the beginning of the film.
Why didn't he tell me he's his father?
More importantly, why didn't he tell anyone - including the character himself - that there's a heart issue? I guess you could say he's still dealing with his grief regarding the father bit, but surely if he doesn't want the boy to go to Earth, he should've just told everyone this extremely valid medical reason to not let him come?
Why didn't Asa's character simply told the girl he'd be off the grid for 7 months? Why didn't he contact her when he was just staying in the room all day?
How could he not know the man was his mother's brother? So unrealistic. His mother was supposed to be very famous astronaut. And nobody told him about his extended family at all?
If he had wanted people to know about him, and he could actually contact randoms on Earth, why didn't he just post on Reddit or something? At the very least, it'd become a conspiracy theory that's floating around.
How did she manage to just steal the car without anyone stopping them?
How did he manage to just go into a classroom pretending to be a student, and till the end of the school day, still no-one found out he was not known to the school?
How could flying into space briefly realistically revive him literally within seconds? If you're drowning, it'd still take you some time to settle down after being saved.
How did they stay in space? And how did you go back safely?
How come they have so much money they could just fly around randomly everywhere?
How could he have outrun both the van and the small aeroplane? I thought everything was heavy for him? And he actually had a bad heart? He couldn't keep up when the girl was walking, so how could he manage to jump on to the plane?
How did they find the funding to send the girl to space? Or have they publicly announced the boy's existence?
I'm giving this 2 stars because I guess if you treat it as something playing in the background because you like to see the faces of the actors and actresses, it'd be OK.
