Review of The Sound of Music (1965) by James-Masaki R — 03 May 2011
Some movies you just hate for them being so popular, overblown, overexposed. As much as I had preconceived notions about "The Sound Of Music", and thinking I would not get a whole lot out of it, watching it with no prejudice recently in full for the first time made me realize that I missed out on a wonderful movie.
It's incredibly photographed and directed by Robert Wise, masterful music by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and great lead performances by Andrews and Plummer. I guess we have to skip over the inconsistencies from the true story and the fiction version, including the English speaking Austrians and Germans, but as the real family of Maria Von Trapp have said, it's just a movie.
An interpretation for cinema. And it was all worth it. An example of what the musical movies are all about.
