Review of The Sound of Music (1965) by John D — 21 Dec 2015
Timeless classic - of the wholesome family classic genre, Definitely a great career move for Julie Andrews! In hindsight, however, I would tweak a couple of things:
(1) When paterfamilias Von Trapp ditches the Baroness for Maria, one woman's bliss = another woman's trauma and tragedy. This is supposed to be a happy film. So something should be down to solve the problem. Enter Max - certainly a charming man, who would fit well into the aristocracy. Without distracting from the essence of the story, pair him off with the baroness.
(2) There is not enough time near the end of the story - between the time when the von Trapps leave the stage to the giving of awards for 3rd and 2nd place - for them to initiate a getaway. So when Max is giving these awards, some kind of improv interviewing of the winners to buy some time would have been better.
