Review of The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010) by Kevin G — 25 May 2011
Here's another one of those films that indulges the guiltiest of pleasures for me. It just has too many things that I love and have a genuine soft spot for. Most importantly to me is the fact that it's a partial homage to Fantasia, something that I remember being totally enthralled with since I was five years old.
I used to pretend to have those magic powers Mickey had and seeing similar events rendered into reality was just too much for me to bear, albeit even if it wasn't done as well as it could've been.
Additionally the cast is just terrific for something like this. Having Nicolas Cage with his nutty, ragged wizard hair and crazy ass magical powers was just too perfect. Also, I really appreciated Jay Baruchel and thought he served as a great protagonist and complement to Balthazar's insanity.
Teresa Palmer serves as a really likable love interest and Toby Kebbell is really funny in the few moments he gets to be present. Sure it's very much the epitome of pathetic male fantasy movies, but honestly if the formula is done right, I love pathetic male fantasies.
Does that say something bad about me? It's quite possible, but as long as you take it for the fun, fantastical popcorn movie it is, it's perfectly harmless. For some reason Jon Turteltaub has a knack for making these really fun movies that I can't help but love, who I would probably put in the same category with Stephen Sommers.
