Review of The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010) by Chris E — 22 Jul 2011
As an avid fan of good magical eye candy, I was excited to watch this after seeing the trailer. Before seeing this I also took the liberty of watching the original "Sorcerer's Apprentice" cartoon featuring Mickey Mouse. Now, onto the review.
The film does take references from the cartoon, but does it in a lackluster show of magical humility without interest. I do respect that the film takes in its own direction and interpretation, but the story overall felt incredibly rushed. It felt more of a product of a mass-produced generalized script adapted to a magical theme. Even if it is a film that is fastened for a more kid-friendly experience, there seemed a great lacking in plot creativity, development of other characters, and genuine storytelling.
I do give it points on the visual effects for they do appear well crafted. The setting was a hit and a miss.
Overall, this film is decent for children and pre-teens, but the completeness of the film holds little water if all the visual effects were removed.
