Review of The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010) by Mitchell B — 11 Aug 2012
I'm pretty sure I know the perfect role for Nic Cage (and it definitely isn't a thousand year old sorcerer). With his personal brand of overly earnest self-importance and fits of maniacally crazed humour the ideal role would have been, if Johnny hadn't already ruined it, Willy Wonka. He's practically the reincarnation of Gene Wilder's unpredictable and darkly gleeful Wonka. I can almost hear him drawling "the schnozberries taste like schnozberries.".
Unfortunately we get Nic Cage once again donning his bad Con Air wig for a visually impressive but ultimately flat fantasy. Plays out like Karate Kid with magic instead of Miyagi. The problems are spelled out from the very beginning with 10 minutes of exposition via narration that sucks the life out of the snappy visual effects.
Even the magical Monica Bellucci can't conjour up any interest from me.
