Review of The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010) by Kenneth L — 22 Mar 2014
I wouldn't go so far as to say this is a good movie; but for a bad movie, it's not bad, if you know what I mean. It's pretty entertaining in its own cheesy way. Nicolas Cage is arguably (definitely) not the first person I would cast to play a centuries-old wizard, and he seems to be aware of that fact.
It's like he knows you keep expecting him to go nuts in this part, and he is surprisingly understated, as if just to spite you. This isn't the jewel in the Cage crown that Bad Lieutenant is, but it's not his worst movie either.
Jay Baruchel does an amiably entertaining PG version of his usual dweeby self. Alfred Molina has a few good lines as the villain. Some of the special effects sequences are surprisingly creative. The movie is utterly predictable, but doesn't take itself too seriously.
As far as Harry-Potter-ripoffs loosely based on old Fantasia sequences go, this is probably as good as it gets.
