Review of The Soloist (2009) by Paul S — 28 Mar 2010
An engaging film from the director of Atonement. Jamie Foxx & Robert Downey Jr have a role reversal from their usual typecasting with the ever grounded Foxx playing the schizophrenic Nathanial Ayers whilst Downey Jr , who has been on the edge of mental breakdown in many of his recent films, plays the grounded Steve Lopez at the LA Times.
The pace was very slow and the story takes a long time to unravel but this allows you to really get into main peopleâ??s minds although I thought the direction from Joe Wright was a little to slick and could have been a bit rougher round the edges to make it appear a bit more gritty. That said it was funny in the right places and clever when it needed to be.
Overall it was very good. I hadnâ??t heard of it before it was picked by my friends and was more than happy with it especially when downloading from Itunes the first three reviews all listed it as 1 out of 5. I think they were all epexcting a big finish but i'm kind of glad the end left it unfinished and not having the gushing hollywood finish....
