Review of The Soloist (2009) by Ryan Gibbons — 04 Nov 2010
I thought it was a pretty well acted film. But I feel like I did not get anything out of it. The relationship between Ayers and Lopez sort of goes nowhere and when the film ended I wondered if whether or not I had just wasted my time.
I give it this rating because I liked some stuff but the ending sort of cheated me in sort of a "ha ha" way. There were a couple of unnecessary shots in this film like an overhead bathroom stall shot where we can see a man doing what he's doing without trouble at all.
It was not really well directed at all in fact the directing and camera work was the worst part of it. The strongest part of the film is it's acting and that's mainly because of the brilliant performance from Foxx.
I guess they figured that if they gave Downey Jr. a really thick beard that he could be a convincing Mexican, sorry I did not see it that way. In short The Soloist is a well acted film with good intentions but it does not work, the acting alone cannot save it.
