Review of The Soloist (2009) by Alvin T — 10 Mar 2010
The problem is, I've watched lots of videos of the REAL people portrayed in this movie, and they are NOTHING like what you see in this movie. My biggest problem is that- in the 60 Minutes video of Mr.
Ayers and Mr. Lopez, I can see why Lopez was interested in Ayers. In the movie, I cannot. Weird that a movie would give someone like Ayers FEWER redeeming qualities! Or is it that Jamie Foxx simply doesn't play the passionate musician passionately enough.
But I also hated that weird hairdo on Foxx in the movie, to make him more comically nuts for the dumber viewers- I never saw it on Ayers in any real video of him ever- and where was his baseball cap? In reality he wore a baseball cap a LOT.
Foxx in the movie is more Bozo-the-Clown-like and nonsensical than the real, more subtle schizophrenia of the Real Ayers, who lives every minute AS IF he is sane, and his craziness is just part of his personality.
Foxx portrays crazy as a sane person trying to stop himself from DOING a weird non-sequetor clown act, and not mentally ill as a way of BEING- a personality type.
