Review of The Soloist (2009) by Margaret C — 15 Aug 2010
A very insightful and beautiful movie which is so heart-touching. To be a training CYC worker, Steve Lopez reminded me a mistake that I have to always remind myself not to make: to 'fix' a person.
The ending of the movie gave me the words that I will keep with myself to guide my professional practice: 'Mental health expert will say the simple act of being someone's friend can change his brain chemistry, improve his functionality in the world.
' The movie, on the other hand, did teach me something very precious, as stated by Steve Lopez at the very end: 'I learned the dignity of being loyal to something you believe in, of holding onto it, above all else; of believing, without question, that it will carry you home.
' This will be the theme to lead my life, including my professional one too. :-).
