Review of The Snowman (2017) by Richard S — 19 May 2018
I've never read any of Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole crime thrillers due to the ridiculous name owned by the central character. I'm sure it is pronounced differently in Norweigan but the little man in my head that does all the reading for me will always pronounce Harry Hole. Any how, I heard this was a pretty dark thriller and the book was highly thought of so I gave the movie a go.
The film is a mess. Firstly it lacks any kind of pace and is quite boring. There was definite;y no threat of danger, suspense or sustained threat. This is partly due to my 2nd point which is the editing, it flits about all over the place, jumping through time for no clear reason and characters appear with vital snippets of information and then are never heard from again. It;s like a new character was created because they couldn't think of any other way of revealing a plot progression point. The editor must have done about 5 minutes work and then threw in the towel.
The only thing that kept me watching was Val Kilmer and not because he gave a particularly memorable performance, I was just transfixed by the way he looks now. I had not seen him in anything since Batman Forever where he was still looking very much like Ice Man but here he looks as far from Val Kilmer as you can possibly get.
