Review of The Snowman (2017) by V K — 24 Oct 2017
As with most films, the book is always better. Jo Nesbo is an outstanding author with an impressive reputation. I have read everything I can get my hands on by him, including every one of his Harry Hole (pronounced "hooley" if you bothered to read the first novel in the series) detective series.
Harry is a very damaged character who struggles to find redemption. This film did a decent job representing the story. That said, this is the 7th novel in the series. It's more difficult to understand a lot of the nuances of the characters when you don't fully understand their motivations and what is really driving them.
This is a very well written, acted, filmed, and edited movie. Perhaps if more people got their heads out of their mobile devices and actualled opened the ancient documents we call books, they could appreciate character development and follow plot lines.
I give the movie 5 stars becauase it is a very good, beautfully shot film. Unlike another famous author, who wrote the Jack Reacher series and had his work destroyed by the Tom Cruise Machine. A series that the character self describes himself as big and ugly (6'5, 240# and rugged) only to be played by a 5'6 Hollywood "pretty boy" that ruined the story lines as he did with Anne Rice.
Jo Nesbo novels are brilliant and anyone that loves Scandanavian authors know his work well. The actors are well cast, the scenery is breathtaking. Excellent acting, screenwriting, filming, and editing.
This film is an inspired first effort of bringing his work to life. I hope more of his work follows.
