Review of The Snake Pit (1948) by Megan S — 08 May 2007
Directed by Anatloe Litvak.
Starring Olivia De Havilland, mark Stevens, Leo Genn, Celeste Holm.
Amazing that this movie was made a long time ago because it presents the problem of mental illness like it would today. I guess there hasnÕt been much change in that state. Virginia (De Havilland) opens our eyes to the life she has been living for five months inside a mental institution, and itÕs as familiar as KeseyÕs ÒOne Flew.Ó People follow rules, the insane comes in all degrees, thereÕs even a dislikable nurse. The movie picks up well and through flashbacks we learn of the crazy origins as Virginia suffers from memory loss brought about by her ugly past. Everything falls down to that one important factorÑthe immensely wonderful performance of Ms. De Havilland.
Best Scene: VirginiaÉas if she was in a snake pit.
QUOTE: ÒIt was strange. Here I was among all these people and I felt as if I was looking at them from some place far away. The whole place seemed to me like a deep hole and the people down in it like strange animals. Like snakes. And IÕve been thrown into it. Yes, as though I were in a snake pit.Ó.
