Review of The Smurfs (2011) by Andrew B — 31 Dec 2011
Before seeing it:
As well as they did with Hank Azaria's appearance as Gargamel, it looks like a "Hop" repeat, although maybe slightly better. Either way, i'm not sure i'm interested.
After seeing it:
Well, it wasn't nearly as horrible as I was expecting. I could've just been in a silly mood, but I laughed at quite a few of the gags. I know I shouldn't laugh at toilet humor, but "someone did some DARK, BAAAD MAGIC in there..." somehow made me giggle; Hank Azaria's performance was amusing. Some gags/scenes were pretty lame, though I can't remember which ones in particular. And I liked how they included a little background on the blue creatures (even though I've seen it in another adaptation film, can't remember...), and the inclusion of the classic illustrations in the credits.
Overall, I wouldn't call it good, but it's kind of alright. The meant-to-be-serious parts fall a little flat. I can't really judge if you'll find anything good here, it's your call.
2/5 stars.
P.S.: Definitely no need for a sequel, let alone two.
