Review of The Smurfs (2011) by James B — 12 Jul 2012

This film needs to come with a label saying "WARNING: We are not responsible for the Smurfs song getting stuck in your head for hours, days or even weeks after watching this film". Even when you don't even realise it you will be singing it in your head.

That said the movie was awesome. It's a feel good throw back from the 80s and reminds me why our generation things all cats are evil. It was nice to have a film with smaller stars for a change and it was great to hear Alan Cumming's natural Scottish accent. It was really well done in so many ways. Smurfette was her sassy feminine but not a please-save-me female character, papa smurf was the grandfather figure you always wanted and the human characters were people that could be related to by those who watched smurfs when they were kids. It was awesome to see a female lead that had to convince the male lead that the tiny insane blue people were good rather than screaming her head off and fainting like an idiot.

Gargamel and his cat... oh my god the cat. Brilliant, so funny. I want animated gifs of so many of the cats expressions :D Watch it just for that, seriously.

If you hated the smurfs or think a movie about cute blue little people would be annoying, then avoid this movie. Otherwise settle down for a fun good feel movie, and you might need some tissues if you're the soppy time like me ;).
