Review of The Smurfs (2011) by Matt W — 04 Aug 2013
Well, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.
It's not Marmaduke, and that's always a good thing.
The best part of the film was when the characters were actually in the Smurf Land... place. I didn't grow up with the Smurfs, they were just there. There was a sense of fantasy, and although it was still pretty bad, I wasn't as bothered by it as it was a cartoon.
When they hit NYC it became even more generic, and everything just became so dull and familiar, as it is just another 'fish-out-of-water' story. Then add some awful 'Smurf' puns, a horrible rapping scene, and product placement galore.
Then you have 2011's 'The Smurfs'.
It's not terrible, although I never laughed, I didn't feel the need to rip my eyes out. It looked nice visually, even though this thing was 100 minutes, when it should have been 80, but still the fact is that I didn't vomit. Lose my sight. Jump off a cliff. Or get Smurfed...
OK, now the cliff is calling.
