Review of The Smurfs (2011) by Lênin B — 02 Jan 2012
My 9-yr old and I rented "The Smurfs". Having just seen "The Muppets" in the theatre, I was reluctant to watch another kid flick, especially since the reviews were pretty grim. Lo and behold, it wasn't that bad.
The movie follows the traditional kid movie formula: an adventure, a villain, cute heroes who come through in the end, etc. There is nothing new.
Pros: The real life and CGI blend is very good and almost seamless, the story zips along, it's a generally positive story, Hank Azaria as the villain plays it over-the-top, Neil Patrick Harris seems to be enjoying his role.
Cons: Not too much for adults, ultimately forgettable, derivative, ridiculous amount of product placements (way to go Sony!).
My 9-yr old enjoyed it and I hung on through until the end. Better than I expected. Decent rental for the kids who'd likely rate this higher than my 60%, while most teenagers and adults would be less than my score. My score is more of an overall average of those two perspectives.
