Review of The Smurfs (2011) by Linda C — 27 Jun 2014
Every village has an idiot.
The Smurfs continue their never-ending battle against the sorcerer, Gargamel. Gargamel knows he can use the essence of Smurfs to be the world's greatest magician. One day he discovers the way to the Smurfs village and destroys it. The Smurfs get scattered and some of them fall through a vortex to Earth. Gargamel chases the Smurfs through the hole. Can the Smurfs avoid Gargamel on Earth and find their way home?
"Somebody has been doing some dark and terrible magic in there!".
Raja Gosnell, director of Home Alone 3, Never Been Kissed, Big Momma's House, Scooby-Doo 1 & 2, Smurfs 2, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua, delivers Smurfs. The storyline for this picture was below average and just an excuse to put Smurfs on Earth. The animation style was pretty good and the acting was as you'd expect for the genre.
"What do you get when you cross a Smurf with a cow?".
"Blue cheese.".
My daughter saw the previews for Smurfs 2 and really wanted to see it, so I recently picked up both films from the grocery store. My daughter seemed to like this movie a lot and was still talking about it the next morning. She didn't like it as much as I thought she would, but it kept her attention. Overall, this is a below average addition to the kids genre and definitely could have been better.
"Are you dead?".
Grade: C-.
