Smurfs 2 is actually an improvement over the first film. Hank Azaria was the only redeeming quality in the first film but the sequel shows that the producers are finally doing their homework and trying to correct their mistakes.

They went back to the events of the source material for inspiration and found a golden nugget in the origin story of smurfette. While most of the action in the film still takes place in modern day, it was done so this time to eventually correct the error of taking the smurfs to the modern day in the first film.

With the return of Gargamel and Azriel to the past, hopefully we won't be seeing Neal Patrick Harris in the third installment, which you know is coming, and instead we can see straight up Gargamel vs the Smurfs in the past for the last film (what should have been the first film).

It should also be noted that unlike the thin plots of many films recently, the story of how Smurfette comes to care for Vexy and Hackus is not rushed and is actually rather believable. There are actually about 45 minutes of good in this film.

On the other hand, the very lame plot about the New Yorker and his step father is skipable. If only movie theaters had a fast forward option.
