Review of The Smurfs 2 (2013) by Jennifer P — 24 Aug 2013
I didn't dislike it. Am I not supposed to put a double negative? I mean...it's the smurfs...animated for a live action film. I thought it was better than I expected. The kids in the theatre liked it and I find that an important aspect of rating some of these summer kids movies. Gargamel and the very expressive Azrael stole the show. Like the first installment I felt that these two characters were the most representative of the ones in the original cartoon series.
It's supposed to be corny, and silly and outlandish. I laughed a helluva lot more than I did in Turbo I'll tell you that. The entire film had this subtext of respecting and loving one's father no matter what shape or form. Past all the witchcraft and foiled wizardry, the important message of family really gets through to the younger audience. Not to mention it brings into question the dilemma of Nature vs Nurture...hopefully no one's naughty kids will go paint themselves blue and hope that will automatically make them on Santa's Nice list. Let's not over think this. It was an amusing family movie. I don't think I can handle a 3rd one though.
