After the first Smurfs picture Gargamel was left on Earth far away from the smurfs. Gargamel's magic is limited without the essence of smurfs. He tries to make new smurfs, just like he made Smurfette, but his smurfs are weak, brownish gray instead of blue, and lack the smurf essence he needs for his magic. He tries to devise a way to send his smurfs back to capture Smurfette so they can band together to lead an effort against the smurfs.
"I'm blind!".
"No, you're in a corn dog.".
Raja Gosnell, director of Home Alone 3, Never Been Kissed, Big Momma's House, Scooby-Doo 1 & 2, Smurfs, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua, delivers Smurfs 2. The storyline for this picture is actually better than the first film and fun to watch unfold (though I didn't hate the first storyline). The animation is very good and the characters are fun to watch. The acting is below par, but what do you expect from this genre, and the cast includes Neil Patrick Harris, Brendan Gleeson, and Jayma Mays.
"Say hello to my enormous friend!".
My daughter got super excited about this movie when the previews aired before one of her other movies. I decided to pick this and Smurfs up and found them both to be wonderfully fun family entertainment. Is either one of them a great film? Absolutely not. But are they both films you and your child can sit and enjoy together? I can speak from experience and say definitively yes. I strongly recommend catching these films with the kiddoes.
"Every time a smurf toots, someone smiles!".
Grade: C+.
