Swanner: Closing out the month of July or as Brian likes to put it "the month before all the crap comes out" The Smurf's are back and this time they are in Paris. The storyline follows Gargamel, who was left in New York at the end of the original film, who is now a famous Magician. He's a big star but unfortunately he's running of the smurf essence that gives him his magic powers. He sends two of his naughties (smurf like creatures that are naughty not nice) to capture Smurfette and bring her back so Gargamel can come back to his full evil power...i can't believe I've just described a real movie.

Of course the Smurfs come back to save Smurfette and the world from Gargamel's evil plan. I know you're wondering how I can like this film. I never saw the Smurf's when they had their TV show so when the movie came out I was pleasantly surprised with the story. Now with the mixture of the live action characters I find it a fun and yes...silly but enjoyable romp. Raja Gosnell returns as director bringing it the same joy he brought the first. He's been directing kids films for years including the Scooby Doo movies and one of my favorites Beverly Hills Chihuahua. He knows how to keep the kids amused while the adults (me) are laughing too. It's a nice script written by five talented kids writers and it shows (look them up if you really what to know their names).

The cast includes live action Hank Azaria, Neil Patrick Harris, Brendan Gleeson and Jayma Mays with voice talents of Christina Ricci, Katy Perry, George Lopez, John Oliver and the late Jonathan Winters. The Smurf movies are good fun. We all learn a lesson and there is always a happy ending. I hope I didn't ruin it for anyone. Of course Gargamel gets his in the end and so does his nasty but funny cat. It's filmed in 3D and you know I'm not a fan but it's very affective here. If you don't like 3D there are usually 2D versions at every theatre. If you liked the first one you'll think this one is Smurftacular.
