Review of The Smurfs 2 (2013) by Susan T — 19 Nov 2013
There were many moments when I made the decision to go see this movie, then changed my mind. I didn't want to risk being bored to death, and I really didn't enjoy the first movie all that much, even though some of the jokes were good.
However, I anticipated an improvement the second time around and that's what I got. There's no denying that this movie is solely aimed at kids, but it was making me laugh a lot, which is the main thing.
Gargamel and his tabby cat Azrael steal the show again - they're very amusing and often laugh-out-loud funny. There are a few action scenes and plenty of special effects, plus a few senseless moments, but what you might not expect is some emotional impact.
This comes about from Smurfette's relationship with the Naughties, plus Patrick's relationship with Victor. It's a good addition. The morals conveyed might be blatant, but they're necessary.
Stuff like "Family is most important" and "Friendship is forever." It gives a positive tone to a silly film. I definitely had fun.
