Review of The Smurfs 2 (2013) by Henry P — 08 Mar 2014
2 years and 2 days before this movie, we saw the smurfs end up in New York. Now, Gargamel is up to a diabolical scheme to create millions of his own smurfs, and rule the world! And it all relies on Smurfette (Katy Perry).
The smurfs are back on earth, and this time, they gotta save their sister (And the world) from Gargamel. The smurf cast to rescue Smurfette are Papa, Clumsy, and Grouchy must return to reality with newcomer Vanity Smurf.
We get better development of Patrick Windlow (Neil Patrick Harris) with the addition of his fath⦠I mean step-father Victor (Brendan Gleeson). One question is how long has it been in the movie's continuity? Blue Winslow is now a lot older than a baby.
The visual effects have well-crafted Smurfs, and a lot more Gargamele tricks. The soundtrack works best where the tie-in songs are added. They do add emotion, but still, you feel it's another form of product placement.
And finally, so many uses of the word Smurf! Not even I can take this much use of that word! It can feel very out-of-place sometimes, but I know why they use it: Because they're Smurfs. This may not be very well written, but there's a fair amount to enjoy.
