Review of The Slumber Party Massacre (1982) by Peter M — 14 Dec 2007
I love this movie. Chicks in various states of undress being chased by a psycho killer with a gigantic electric drill. That right there pretty much sums up the plot for ya! Rita Mae Brown's clever script, draws a fine line between sending up all your favourite slasher movie cliches, and pandering to them aswell.
Director Amy Holden Jones nails the right vibe, with a great mix of scares, laughs, boobs and gore. It's very cool that two chicks have made such exploitative movie - not only is there a boob shot within the first 5 mins, but later on there is a girls locker room shower scene where the camera actually pans down for an ass shot - this flick doesn't ever try to hide it's sleaziness!! Our aforementioned psycho Russ Thorn brings some real 80s flair to the slasher genre decked out in denim jeans and jacket, kinda looking like Fuad Ramses from Blood Feast, after wandering onto the set of a Bon Jovi video.
Russ is obviously over-compensating for lacking in the...erm...'tool'...department, by using a massive two foot long drill as his weapon of choice. Sure sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but not in this flick - there is a great low angle shot where we can just see Russ's legs from behind with his weapon dangling down, ready to 'drill' his next victim - LOL! Perhaps this one was ahead of it's time - Had this movie been released in the post-Scream 90s slasher boom, I think it's tounge in cheek flavour would have been appreciated a lot more.
