Review of The Slammin' Salmon (2009) by Max M — 13 Dec 2009
The Broken Lizard guys (Super Troopers, the unfairly maligned, but truly fantastic Club Dread, and Beerfest) take on the restaurant industry in their latest comedy.
The story is simple - Michael Clark Duncan plays a not-so-bright retired boxing champ, "Slammin'" Cleon Salmon, who is in danger of losing his high-end Miami restaurant to Yakuza mobsters unless his waitstaff can make enough money to pay off the debt in one night.
Unlike the dreadfully unfunny film Waiting, whose feeble story also centered around a brusque restaurant wait staff, this film is legitimately hilarious and well crafted. Not all of the jokes work, but the Broken Lizard troupe, who have a terrific and unique brand of humor that is equally easy-going and raucous, are strong enough performers and writers (the members include Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Paul Soter, Eric Stolhanske, and Steve Lemme) to keep moving forward at deft comic speed no matter how strong or weak a gag might be.
