Review of The Skin I Live In (2011) by Alexandria J — 30 Jan 2014
I'd never heard of Almodovar prior to seeing this film, I knew nothing of his films or his reputation, I also know very little as to what this film was about - and this is the very best way to enter into this film. I was totally blown away by this dark fairytale. Every single frame is beautiful. This was obviously a very talented director I had been ignorant to.
The Skin I Live In follows Antonio Banderas as Dr. Robert Ledgard - a plastic surgeon who ever since his wife was burned in a car crash attempts to cultivate the perfect skin... all he needs is a guinea pig for his twisted obsession.
A thriller, a horror - it's pretty much both but it's sheer twisted beauty takes it somewhere beyond. This film became one of my favourite films of 2011 - a year full to the brim with quality films. This is the perfect way to introduce yourself to Almodovar, and if you already know him then you'll be no doubt already planning an anticipated re-watch of this bizarrely twisted tale.
