Review of The Skeleton Key (2005) by Allen B — 27 Sep 2009
Eh. Not sure why I decided to watch this. I guess I had heard good things, much like I had heard good things about the first Transformers film, and we all know how God awful that film was. Serves me right.
This film is a fine example of an interesting, albeit unoriginal, concept made stupid thanks to inept directing, crappy dialogue, and poor acting. It's obvious throughout that the people involved just wanted to make something quick that would make lots of money and be rendered irrelevant a month later, and that's too bad, cause in the hands of more capable filmmakers, it could have been quite the film.
That isn't to say it's not without its merits. Kate Hudson half naked for one. That was nice. There are also certain scenes that stick out, namely, just one: the flashback lynching scene with the screaming and the burning and the weird angles. It's done in a weird, jittery style that works on levels the rest of the film doesn't even come close to reaching, especially at the end of the film when all is revealed and the almighty "a ha!" moment comes in to paint everything you've just seen in an entirely different light. Well done. Shame the rest of it couldn't have as interesting.
Overall, eh. A typical mainstream horror film with an interesting concept that is wasted due to lousy writing/direction/acting.
