Review of The Skeleton Key (2005) by Luke J — 29 May 2012
It wins points for originality, utilizing voodoo/hoodoo as the backdrop for paranormal activity. However, The Skeleton Key fails in most other areas, including the fatally obvious "duh" (for lack of better word) moments.
For instance, what goes through her mind when she decided to break into the former slave room when it sounds like someone is trying to escape from it? Also, Kate Hudson could have done a better job approaching this sort of film, because it seems apparent that she should be doing a film of a different genre completely.
For the scares, the jumps come from the living, primarily and disappointingly. However, I will give the film props for the mirror scene climax. The eerie image of the servant in the mirror is well done, and it succeeds in that eeriness.
The voodoo/hoodoo backdrop however, could have been used better, since the buildup to the climax just becomes tired and almost like a chess game with a two-year-old. Overall, The Skeleton Key is original in premise, generally generic in scares, and subpar in regards to story and plot.
