Review of The Sixth Sense (1999) by Jessica P — 28 Dec 2013

Yeah... It's pretty good and that's about it. Had I been of viewing age when this film was released it probably would have blown my mind too. Besides the ending that is as twisty as we love it to be and an amazing performance from Haley Joel Osment, this film seems kind of average.

While the initial premise is brilliant and the ending is of course is great, some of the middle portion of this film felt flat, it was poorly scripted and I noticed some errors (which I won't say due to spoilers).

Don't get me wrong, it's an immensely watchable thrill ride that's also entertaining, held my interest for its duration and really got me invested but it wasn't perfect and I'm sure if Shyamalan had released this today it wouldn't nearly have had the same impact partly due to the fact that a generally creepy performance wouldn't be present because Osment would have been too old and he is important because he made this movie, I can't see it being as effective if he wasn't present.

No disrespect to a man just trying to make a living but I think Shyamalan is a one hit wonder because after seeing some of his recent films (Happening, Airbender) makes me wonder how this man ever got nominated for two Oscars and how a film he made was nominated for Best Picture.

I do feel sorry for him in a way, I'm guessing people don't really review his movies fairly because they're comparing it to this.
