Review of The Sitter (2011) by Ross J — 03 Sep 2012
This pseudo remake of the 80's classic I grew up with Adventures in Babysitting is a mixed bag of treats for the most part. This much raunchier, less funny and surprisingly heartfelt version centers on the great Jonah Hill as the babysitter this time around who takes the kids he's babysitting into the city to grab some cocaine for his somewhat girlfriend before meeting up with her to have sex.
Along the way chaotic mishaps ensue, as well as some funny moments, so off the mark ones and some truly endearing ones. The most effective one being him helping one of the kids confront his feeling for his best friend.
And there are a few in here that get you. The kids are mostly charming and Hill as excellent comic timing as usual. The direction is pretty generic but screenplay does take the material to a few unexpected places.
Sam Rockwell is weird but appreciated as a drug dealer and the old school 90's hip hop soundtrack is inviting and inspired. It's also nice to see a film about suburbia with such a mixed cast helping the film expand it's appeal.
Overall it's entertaining but slightly forgettable. 3/5.
