Review of The Sitter (2011) by Oz S — 24 Sep 2013
Oh boy did this look promising. It had a few funny moments at the start as well, then it descends into some weird crap.
Unfortunately, the weird crap includes cringe humour, the insane extension of sub characters, too many subplots and conveniences. This movie's cringe humour can be unrelenting, it isn't as bad as The Odd life of Timothy Green or The Internship but it is still pretty bad.
That's pretty much all you need to know unless you want to hear some spoilers as this movie is something that needs commentary, as there is so much too look at.
*SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT*.
One of the character extensions is that one of the kids is gay and he has been taking pills to make him "normal". His parents mask this and say it is an anxiety issue. Dear Cthulu is this dark and rather uncomfortable. This scene also kills the pacing of the movie and whatever mood remains. It is also revealed that one of the other kids who is adopted would always be moved onto another family, being the reason for his actions and the youngest, who is a little girl idolises celebrities and their lifestyles so applies make-up and dresses in a particular fashion in order to resemble one; even if she is completely oblivious to how that is not the entirety of the celebrity lifestyle.
It also turns out that Noah's "girlfriend" who you see at the beginning of the movie is a crackhead and a not particularly good person.
The problem here is that all these subplots and character extensions don't need to exist and they barely work. I came here to see a comedy, not a tragedy. So all this makes for a good old fashioned mood killing... Honestly, even at 77 minutes this movie is too long, and if they were to rid of a lot of these subplots and went for the mood, humour and pacing of the first 20 minutes it would've gotten a higher rating. This movie is advertised as being a good time but there are many long scenes that are humour-free and that dismantles any hope of this movie being a good time.
