Review of The Sisters Brothers (2018) by Ron F — 18 Oct 2018
The previews before this moving started included the upcoming and terrible looking Holmes and Watson, which served as a reminder of how good John Reilly can be when he isn't saddled with Will Ferrell.
From confusing a prostitute to understanding that his brother can't grasp the concept of quitting while ahead of the game to punching a corpse , Reilly brings a steady insistence to many of his scenes.
The movie took care to show the gritty and filthy nature of live in the 1850s, though it is highly doubtful that any Colt Navy 1851 revolvers would have made it to the west coast at any point before winter--a voyage by sailing ship around South America was the fastest route for cargo and still took 4ish months.
The production could have easily made the date, say, 1854 and not had to worry about having the characters use guns that wouldn't have been available in the Pacific Northwest at the time the story takes place.
That aside, the movie isn't what you'd expect from a typical western have a feel more like Unforgiven than Sons of Katie Elder or Silverado. It is worth seeing on the big screen due to some wonderful cinematography, unlike some movies which are just as good on a television.
