Review of The Sisters Brothers (2018) by Stephanie M — 30 Sep 2018
Mediocre. Decent acting at times. But, the story and direction seemed all over the place... which could take you out of the film at times. It seems like it all could have been a lot better if more thought was put into the direction, and possibly editing.
Not terrible. But definitely disappointing if you were looking for something more put together. There were also some sparsely and strangely used shots that didn't necessarily compliment the tone or style, but instead seemed to be there to remind you that the director was present.
I thought John C Reilly did well with his role, as did Riz Ahmed. I expected a bit better from Gyllenhaal and Phoenix, but that could have been due to lackluster directing. The timing of things seemed to often stumble or drag out the story and performances.
If you like quirky westerns, are somewhat forgiving of experimentation that doesn't quite come off, or are a fan of anyone in the cast, you still might enjoy it. Otherwise, you might not.
